The Emergence of Mobile Payment Systems

mobilepaymentsHave you ever heard the term mobile payment, mobile wallet or mobile money transfer? These modes of mobile payments generally refer to the system of payment services that are being done through any and all types of mobile devices. This is another payment option aside from paying using cash, credit/debit cards or checks. The typical mobile devices used for mobile payment are the smartphones and tablets. With this system, they do not have to use money or their credit cards in paying in order to avail huge range of products and services both digitally or in the actual stores. The concept of not using currency to pay has a long history, but the technology of mobile payment was just recently perfected to support its availability worldwide.

By 2013, it is estimated that using mobile payment in the market may accrue as much as US$600 billion as this system is increasingly being adopted all around the world in various ways. The most common mobile payment systems make use of premium Short Messaging System (SMS) based transaction services, mobile direct billing NFC, mobile web payment or the WAP, QR code scanning and the contactless Near Field Communication (NFC) transactions. Today, the NFC-based payment and the premium SMS payments are the most common models in mobile payment systems.

The use of SMS was the ‘primitive’ model of mobile paying. Through SMS, a consumer will send his/her request of payment through a SMS text message or an Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) to special numbers/codes of the seller. The seller will then charge the consumer and the billing will go directly to the phone bill of the consumer. This SMS messaging payment system has several disadvantages such as poorness in its reliability because the requests are sent by text only; it may fail it the message gets lost. The slower speed is also attributed to the fact that sending messages is really slow and due to high traffic of ending messages, merchants will sometimes receive the message/request after some time. Because the message is sent in plain text over radio frequency, the encryption of the message is poor and thus, it poses the problem of security.

Using this system also poses higher cost for the merchant and hence, the additional costs are also given to the consumers and with this high cost, the payout rates are low. Another problem is that the customer service is lousy because once they received the goods, then it would be hard to remember the whole process again. This means that follow-on sales for the merchant are not that high.  Due to this other models were developed to rectify the shortcomings of SMS services. Among them are WAP, direct mobile billing and NFC. In the newer models of mobile payment, consumers are ensured of safe buying and the right customer services.

The Success of Music Download and Distribution

Contrary to popular belief, the music industry is alive and well. Even while big corporations are trying to stop free music downloads, artists are creating inroads in making themselves accessible to their fans. Through the years, there have been efforts by artists to get on the internet and distribute their music for free.

ipodIn a way, the latest direct to the internet approach by David Bowie with his comeback album shows that internet distribution models work and can be financially viable for the artist, with or without an established music company backing up the artist. Of course, that’s David Bowie, a musical legend and artist with a career spanning more than forty years.

Bowie released his album’s first single on iTunes in January, ahead of the album release in March. The power of the internet when it comes to music downloads is the same power that it has over other media. Print media and TV have been affected in a great way. These media are now in the process of re-invention to better position themselves on the internet. Other media distribution has proven viability via paid clicks and click-through to sponsors. Besides ads, another way for companies to earn would be through subscriptions and paid services as well as sales of content, namely copies of records.

Other players in media distribution have also gone forward with big plans and big sales. Even with the demand for free music or for a convenient internet music distribution model, there is no assurance that a company can earn with a music download service.

In Sweden, Spotify started to offer music to internet users in 2008. By 2010, it had 2.5 million paid subscribers out of a total 10 million subscribers. In mid-2011, the subscription was opened to US customers, and by the end of 2012, there were 5 million paying customers out of 20 million subscribers. It distributes music with digital rights management (DRM) protection from established big name music companies. It has proven to be a success and has expanded to Facebook and Twitter.

On the other hand, Guvera is an Australian company which distributes DRM-free music, and for free. Recently it has been trying to re-create itself for a re-launch. A do-over seems required as it lost more than $20 million over the past two years. It has more than 3 million titles on its catalog.

Another Australian company is BigPond Music. Part of the BigPond group which also happens to be Australia’s largest ISP. The corporate group has several other members, which create a self-contained synergistic ecosystem. With more than 15 million titles on its inventory this internet music distributor has a fair chance of getting more customers.

Internet music distribution is proving to be the next best thing for music companies. It should be interesting to see where this leads.
